The Teaching English Language Learners (TELL) program provides NSW primary and high schools with a comprehensive program of professional learning to support teachers of EAL/D learners across the range of school subject areas. It reflects current EAL/D pedagogy research and NSW priorities in literacy, numeracy, assessment and Quality Teaching.
While EAL/D specialist teachers work with targeted EAL/D learners to provide English language support across subject areas, they are not able to work across every class in the school. English language is best taught within the context of the subject area and class teachers share this responsibility with the EAL/D teacher. There is an on-going need for a professional learning program which provides mainstream teachers with the skills and understandings to effectively support EAL/D learners.
